Plastic shopping bags should be banned

It is possible to use alternatives which are much more environmentally-friendly. And if we must have plastic bags, at least make them bio-degradable.

I totally agree BUT it is interesting that most people who call themselves environmentally conscious only give up on the “easy things”, like plastic bags.

What about using their cars less… err… no chance. What about using less electricity… sorry that’s too much hassle (although notably some people have done this).

The latest trend is to focus the lesser environmental concerns and feel self righteous over them, and then completely forget about the REALLY important ones.

All I’m saying is if we are all going to have impact let’s start prioritising in terms of danger to the environment and NOT prioritising by how easy it is for people to do.

Should do this

Then again, there is always the view that we should go for the ‘low-lying fruit’ first. It might have less impact, but it is better than nothing. If it raises the consciousness of people who would otherwise do nothing, then that is a win, and hopefully they will be more inclined to then tackle more difficult environmental changes.

I actually think disposable coffee cups should be gotten rid of, ahead of plastic bags. It would be really easy for people to carry around their own reusable cup and stop all those disposable ones being manufactured and chucked away.

Hi Stompy :o)

A few days ago I did some more reasoned thinking, and came to the same conclusion as you.

Indeed I agree with you that it is better for organisations such as Green Peace and Friends of the Earth to start with small things, rather than start with larger things, that may alienate people completely. e.g. if people were asked to give up their cars they’d scream and throw a hissy fit! ;o)

Interesting re coffee cups. A good point!

Have yourself a might fine second half of the week kind sir :o)

Cheers,
x
